Wigan BEST swimmers were in action at the 2014 February Derventio Open Meet held in Sheffield last weekend, were again we saw members produce more life time best times. 12 year-old Charlotte Nester continued her excellent form by adding 2 more NQT to her 2014 collection. In the girls 200m Backstroke Charlotte powered her way to a bronze medal finishing with superb 2:34.39 inside the National mark, in the shorter event Charlotte again pb with a 1:12.77 another NQT and bronze medal. Not satisfied with 3rd place Charlotte went two places better in the girls 100m breaststroke winning in a time of 1:20.45. Rachel Byrne added another National Times to her 2014 haul with a fantastic 1:03.64 in the ladies open 100m butterfly finishing just outside the medals.
This was a great meet for BEST swimmers, who came away with 8 medals in all over the weekend. With the stars of the future swimming in the 10 year-old girls 200m backstroke Katherine Baker had her best long course swim to date taking the gold medal in a pb time of 2:55.26 with team-mate Jennifer Green achieving the 12 year-old Regional QT in the 10 year girls 100m breaststroke winning the event in fine style with a pb time of 1:29.79. Jennifer went on to take the Bronze medal in the girls 400m freestyle in 5:18.14.
For the boys 13 year-old Harley Beentjes continued his excellent form producing life-time best in all his events over the weekend with his best swim without doubt coming in the boys 200 butterfly snatching the bronze medal in the 13/14 year age group.
All swimmers performed on or inside their best with 5 swimmers already booked their place at this years National Championships and several more swimmers coming ever closer.
